FIREFIGHTER POSITION



The Eligibility List expires Summer 2011.  We will not begin to seek applicants until  spring of 2011.  All information pertaining to this process can be found here or by contacting Terri VanDyke via email or by calling   (309) 752-1584.

 

At this time the following information pertains to the hiring process for the City of East Moline - Please keep in mind that the details may be amended and items added or deleted prior to compiling the next eligibility list.

General Job Description (not all inclusive):

1.    A starting salary of approximately $36,000 annual.

2.    Applicants must be 21 years of age at such time as they file their application.  Applicants shall be under 35 years of age, at the time of application and at time of final eligibility list posting, unless exempt from such age limitation as provided in Section 5/10-2.1-6 of the Fire and Police Commissioner's Act.  

3.    Must obtain Firefighter II training within his/her 12-month probationary period.

4.    Must obtain paramedic license within 24 months of initial appointment.

5.    Any person who is appointed as a member of the fire department shall establish residency within the State of Illinois, and within fifteen-mile radius of City Hall, 915 16th Avenue, East Moline, IL, within a period of 2 years from and after the date of his/her commencement of employment with the City. 

6.    Works 24-hour shifts equal to a 48-hour week.  

7.    Benefit package includes Paid Holidays and Vacations, Major Medical Insurance, and Pension.    

8.    Responds to fire calls and other emergencies, which threaten life and property.

9.    Must physically participate in fire suppression work and other emergency rescue activities.

10. Must be able to drive emergency vehicles in the Fire Department, including rescue boat with proper license.

11. Must be able to operate a wide range of equipment:  extrication equipment, SCBA, ventilation tools, hoses, nozzles, ladders, and fire pumps, etc.

12. Must be familiar with hydraulics and the City water system, including fire hydrants.

13. Participates in training on a regular basis regarding various topics and equipment.

14. Participates in routine station cleaning, maintenance, and inspections.

15. Assists the Fire Inspector in fire cause and origin investigations, as well as, fire prevention and education.

16. Must have a thorough knowledge of addresses in the areas in which the East Moline Fire Department responds.

 

Hiring Procedure:

 1.    You must have a written statement from a qualified physician stating that you are physically fit to take the agility test.

2.    AGILITY TEST -Applicant must pass each station of the agility test in order to proceed with the hiring process.   

3.    WRITTEN EXAMINATION - The written examination will be given only to persons who have passed the agility test.

4.    ORAL EXAMINATION - The oral examination will be given to persons who have passed the agility and written examinations.

5.    A thorough BACKROUND INVESTIGATION will be performed.

6.    A POLYGRAPHandPSYCHOLOGICAL EXAMINATION must be passed. 

7.    All applicants listed on the eligibility list will be subject to final PHYSICAL EXAMINATION. 

  

Application Process: 

Current Firefighter Eligibility List Expires:  July 26, 2009

When returning your application, please bring the following:

A.   Copy of birth certificate.

B.   Picture I.D.

C.   Copy of military discharge (if applicable).

D.   Copy of DD Form 214 (if applicable).

E.   Copy of firefighter courses and/or certificates.

F. Copy of high school diploma or GED certificate.  Preference points will be given for verification of either an Associate's Degree in the field of fire service or emergency medical service, or Bachelor's Degree in any major from an accredited college or university. 

G.    Proof of previous fire and/or emergency medical experience (if applicable).  Similar to military preference points, possible preference points may be given for a) Verification of being a paid-on-call certified Firefighter II, Paramedic, or any combination of those capacities of a municipality in the State of Illinois, b) Verification of Firefighter III, c) Verification of full-time employment as a firefighter/paramedic by a fire protection district or another municipality for at least two (2) years in the State of Illinois. 

H.   The signed waivers and release forms.

I.   Original copy of medical examination or signed physician's statement, stating that you are physically fit to take the agility test. 

J.      A copy of certification of naturalization, if a naturalized citizen.

 The hiring process will take approximately 6 to 8 weeks.  Good Luck!
