Canine Program

The East Moline Police Department maintains a police canine which preforms police duties to assist officers in the field. Ivan is a full service police canine. His training allows him to locate narcotics, locate evidence in the field, track human scent, apprehend criminals and protect his handler. Ivan rides in a marked police car with his trained K9 handler and works the same hours as the officer.

In addition to regular patrol police duties, Ofc. Morrisey and Ivan are also is utilized by the narcotics units for drug detection on narcotics investigations. The K9 team is also utilized by area agencies in our mutual aid agreement to provide and share services with other police agencies.

		K9 Officer Brian Morrisey Canine Ivan 2007 - Present 309-752-1555 Ofc. Morrisey joined the East Moline Police Department in 1999. Prior to his employment at the East Moline Police Department he served in the United States Marine Corps for 10 years. Canine Ivan is a pure bred German Shepard born in Germany in 2006. Ivan received training while a young dog still in Germany in the sport of Schutzund. Schutzhund is a German word meaning protection dog. While a young dog still in Germany, Ivan learned the skills of obedience, tracking, and protection. The standards of protection are very similar to those for dogs in police work. Once in America, Ivan received further training in the identification in the scent of narcotics. Ofc. Morrisey and Canine Ivan then went through a 10 week team canine school to learn the art of working together as a police canine team.

Past K9 Teams
The East Moline Police Department started its modern day K9 program in 1968 with Ofc. Nielsen and K9 Duke. It was the second canine program in the area, preceeded by the Silvis Police Department. Other departments added K9 programs in the mid 1970's. The East Moline Police Department previously had a police service dog around 1925. Modern day canine programs require extensive training and have evolved dramatically. The first canines were used for tracking perpetrators, locating missing persons, protection and deterance. Early canines were not narcotic detection trained as today's full service dogs. East Moline Police's first canine was trained in Moline, Kansas and certified by a canine trainer who established the Witchita Police canine program. Today's service dogs receive certification at the Illinois State Police and are certified through the National Police Canine Association. Additionally today's canines have Narcotics Detection Certifications. The East Moline Police Department did not have an active K9 from 1972 to 1993 when Ofc. Roselieb is credited with reviving the K9 program and Gero subsequently joined the department and began service in 1993. The department has had a canine in service almost continuously for the past 15 years.
